The Signal Foundation was created by WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton and current CEO of Signal Messenger Moxie Marlinspike. Brian Acton left WhatsApp in 2017 and donated $50 million to fund Signal. The Signal app has been endorsed by very popular personalities like Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, American whistleblower Edward Snowden, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, and more.

Signal App or WhatsApp?

Like WhatsApp, the Signal app is also providing features like secure messaging, voice and video calls with end-to-end encryption. Users can create groups and add up to 150 members in a group on Signal and not everyone is automatically added to the group. In the case of WhatsApp, without the permission of a user, the group admin can add them to a group. But this feature is not included in the Signal app.

Signal to provide a very useful feature named “note to self”. It helps to write some important notes and remembering things easily. Usually, WhatsApp users creating a group and add only that person’s number to create a space for writing some note for self.

In the case of the Signal app, users can utilize the “note to self” feature while chatting with other groups. Also, the Signal app allows its user to relay their voice calls to app servers to conceal their identity from their contacts.
When compared to WhatsApp, Signal collects much fewer user data. WhatsApp collects data including device ID, user ID, phone number, email address, contacts, advertising data, and payment information, Signal only collects users’ phone numbers.

Like WhatsApp Signal also have an end-to-end encryption feature to protect the user data. Signal using the open-source Signal Protocol to implement end-to-end encryption. This app also encrypts all files with a four-digit password and users can also get a local backup. And it encrypts group calls as well. In the case of security,  another notable feature of the Signal app is the ” Sealed Sender ” feature under which no one will be able to figure out who is sending and receiving messages.

How to use Signal App

  1. Download and Install the App from Google Play Store
  2. After opening the app, first, we see a statement ‘ Take Privacy with you. Be yourself in every message ‘. Under this, you can see the terms & privacy policy link. So you can read the privacy policies of this application before using it.
  3. Tap the Continue button. It will show a message that asks your contacts to connect with your friends.
  4. After allowing it, the app will ask you to make and manage phone calls. You can deny or allow it to go to the next step.
  5. Now the time to enter your phone number. just enter your phone number, the Signal app will send you a 6 digit OTP number via SMS.
  6. After the successful authorization, You can set up your profile.
  7. In the next step, you can create a unique Pin number for your Signal account. Signal says ‘ PINs keep information stored with Signal encrypted so only the particular user can only access it. The pin number must be more than 4 digits.
  8. It’s all set. Now you can start sending messages through the Signal app.
